Ruthlyn Alberts-Swaby

Ruthlyn Swaby is an educator and an artist, currently working in the field of education and visual arts facilitating the academic and professional development of student-teachers in their preparation for the teaching profession.   Her passion for education is visible in 32 years of teaching experience which includes teaching at early childhood, primary, secondary, continuing education, undergraduate and graduate levels of the education system.  She is currently serving in the capacity of lecturer at The Mico University College (the college of choice for teacher education), and facilitator for online education courses at University of the West Indies Open Campus. Mrs. Swaby also volunteers her service part-time as Executive Director at YWCA Kingston, and as a member of the Board of Directors for St. Barnabas Early Childhood Development Centre.

Her academic accomplishment includes Master of Education with a concentration on lifelong learning obtained from Mount Saint Vincent University Canada, Bachelor of Arts with honors obtained at the University of the West Indies Mona and the Edna Manley college for the Visual and Performing Arts, and Diploma in Teaching with specialization in visual arts which she obtained at The Mico University College.  She is presently doing doctoral studies in education.

Mrs. Swaby’s first introduction to teaching was as a grade four student when she assisted Mrs. Brebner in the JAMAL programme at Boy’s Town All Age School as she waited for her brother in the common entrance class. Teaching has been a major high point since then as she facilitated children in her community with their homework and later in the Ministry of National Security and Justice Homework Programme at the Community Centre as well as conducting art classes at church and art club at the St. Barnabas Early Childhood Development Centre.

On becoming a member of YWCA Kingston in 1990 while being a student at The Mico Teachers College  she continued serving the organization serving on continuing education , world fellowship and public relations committees and facilitating students’ development in the arts at camps, youth club and other activities presented by Kingston YWCA and Spanish Town YWCA. 

Her interest is in early education programmes, continuing education and remedial or intervention programmes which are now being facilitated by Kingston YWCA and Spanish Town YWCA. She endeavours to offer service with full commitment to the best of her ability by working collaboratively, to share ideas and engage in activities that will facilitate smooth organized operations of the organization, progress, and development in the organization and excellence in all its endeavours.
